Om chanting, the pranava or primordial sound, is a simple vocal practice traditionally done to centre the mind and lengthen and steady the breath.

How to practise

  1. Sit comfortably with a straight spine and the eyes gently closed.
  2. Take a slow, full breath in through the nose.
  3. As you breathe out, chant 'Om' in a low, even tone.
  4. Let the sound move from a rounded 'O' into a long, humming 'M'.
  5. Feel the gentle vibration in the chest, throat, and head.
  6. Pause naturally after each chant, then breathe in again.
  7. Repeat for the chosen time, then sit in silence and listen.
