Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk (dairy or plant)
  • 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 pinch ground black pepper
  • 1 small pinch ground cardamom
  • 1 small pinch ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ghee
  • 1 tsp honey or jaggery, to taste

Method

  1. Pour the milk into a small saucepan and set it over low to medium heat.
  2. Whisk in the turmeric, black pepper, cardamom and cinnamon.
  3. Add the ghee and let the milk warm gently, stirring often, until it is hot but not boiling.
  4. Keep it on a low simmer for two to three minutes so the spices infuse.
  5. Take the pan off the heat and let it cool for a minute.
  6. Stir in honey or jaggery to taste and pour into a cup to sip warm.

The pinch of black pepper is traditional and helps the turmeric do its work. Add honey only once the milk has cooled a little.
