The honest safety picture
Here the account has to be candid, because shilajit’s greatest strength and its greatest risk come from the same source. The mineral-rich environment that gives shilajit its fulvic acid and its trace-mineral content is also an environment that can concentrate unwanted substances. Modern chemical study, including the well-known characterisation of shilajit’s fulvic acid and dibenzo-alpha-pyrones, has made clear that raw shilajit is a complex material.
The documented concern is contamination. Raw or poorly purified shilajit can contain heavy metals such as lead, arsenic and mercury; it can carry mycotoxins and fungal organisms; and it may hold free radicals and other impurities picked up from its surroundings. This is not a fringe worry invented by critics; it is precisely why the classical tradition never used shilajit raw, and why responsible modern producers test the finished material. The substance itself has a long record of traditional use, but that record always assumed proper purification.
Why shodhana matters, and its limits
Classical Ayurveda addresses this through shodhana, purification. Raw shilajit is traditionally cleaned by dissolving it in water or a herbal decoction such as Triphala liquid, straining it repeatedly to remove sand, grit and plant debris, and then concentrating it back down. Done properly, shodhana removes visible impurities and is part of what makes the material fit for use.
It is important to be honest about what purification can and cannot do. Traditional straining reliably removes what can be seen and filtered. It is less dependable at removing dissolved heavy-metal ions that are chemically bound within the material, which is a limitation the classical method could not have known about and which only modern analysis can confirm.
